Years ago, two friends started an experimental noise band which would eventually be called TITHONUS: Ben Overlaet (guitar/vocals) and Jan Van Woensel (drums). They recorded and self-released two songs: Movements and I Want to Disappear into the Black Back of the Night Watch (2009).
While working on their 70 minutes long noise composition, Jan would occasionally also appear on guitar to create soundscapes, which brought extra dimension to the music. They played several gigs in Belgium (Antwerp, Brussels, Leuven, Watou), Germany (Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg) and Norway (Oslo). This noise composition was recorded live on their first public appearance, in an old industrial building, and was called “The Secret Session”.
Later Ben’s brother Dave joined the band on bass and their music became more structured, although the adventure of noise would never be far away. After a while, Jan decided to leave the band to work on his own music and Tim Jamée replaced him as a drummer. In that period their typical ‘grunge’ sound was born. Tithonus draws their inspiration from bands like Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, P.J. Harvey, Placebo, Pixies, and even from bands like The Cure, Oasis, etc.
After three years of having been with the band, Tim left and Jan rejoined, this time as a fulltime drummer. Besides of the two songs back in 2009 Tithonus recorded two demo albums so far: Safe (2014, with Jamée on drums) and a self-titled one (2016, with Van Woensel on drums). They seek to play as many gigs as possible since they really are a live band – with music that sounds equally as good in small clubs as in open fields. Besides gigs they hope to record a full album in the not so far future. Tithonus are Ben Overlaet: guitar/vocals Dave Overlaet: bass/backing vocals Jan Van Woensel: drums.
